The summer may be nearing an end, but Katy Perry’s still in her Daisy Dukes and bikini top, straddling the chart universe.
That’s the news from one-day sales reports sent to us by those retailers who haven’t permanently deleted us from their e-mail base.
Coming on the heels of two straight smash singles, including “California Gurls” and the title track, Perry’s sophomore Capitol Records album, Teenage Dream, finds her in the clouds, set to debut at #1 with a total of around 200k. And while the first-week sales are slightly below expectations, if the steady stream of hit singles keep coming, it could eventually approach a similar performer, Black Eyed Peas’ E.N.D., which is up to 2.7m and still selling 12-15k a week more than a year after its release.
Pop music is a fickle mistress, and even though she can show an artist all sorts of devotion the first time around, she can just as easily shun that same artist the second time around. In the music business, the second album is always the hardest one to pull off, as the expectations tend to be high, the time constraints are usually even tighter and the audience tends to move on pretty quickly. But it seems like these rules do not apply to Katy Perry, who drops her sophomore release Teenage Dream today. In the wake of the success of her smash debut One of the Boys, Perry came back fighting with the chart-topping “California Gurls” and the rapidly-rising “Teenage Dream,” and the rest of the album is similarly incredible.
The thing that really puts Teenage Dream over the top is its consistency. There are no real weak tracks to be found (though if you don’t think Perry is much of a balladeer, you’ll probably take issue with two or three of these), and it’s a good mix of over-the-top tracks (like the sex-crazed “Peacock“), party tunes (”Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)”), kiss-offs (”Circle the Drain“) and sweet old-school pop creations (”E.T.“). In fact, it’s quite possible that Teenage Dream is the best second effort in pop music history. Continue Reading »
Katy Perry rose to the top of the charts with songs about kissing girls, Vegas vacations gone awry and how awesome “California Gurls” are. So, when fans pop Teenage Dream into their boom boxes, they might be surprised to hear Perry show her vulnerable side on the song “Pearl.” The ballad is about an outgoing, strong young woman who lets a guy “keep her in the dark.” The catch, at the end, is that Perry is actually singing about herself.
The singer admitted that by the time she started working on “Pearl,” her album was nearly complete. But, it was missing something. So she headed back into the studio to work on the track. And she thinks it finishes her record in just the right way. Continue Reading »
Katy Perry decided to embrace her inner teenage girl when she sat down to write the title track from her forthcoming Teenage Dream album, out Tuesday. And she felt the only place she could get in touch with those warm, fuzzy feelings was her hometown of Santa Barbara, California.
The song, which she co-wrote with and was produced by Dr. Luke, Max Martin and Benny Blanco, recalls a simpler time when love felt like the first time. “Well, going to Santa Barbara, which isn’t very far from L.A., it was just like it brought me back home and it took me out of this fast-paced L.A.,” she told MTV News. “Everybody climbing on top of each other to get to that next step on the ladder … sometimes L.A. can get exhausting.” Continue Reading »
Wellington, Aug 15 (ANI): Katy Perry says she’s having a ‘breakdown’, courtesy her wedding preparations.
The 25-year-old singer is set to tie the knot with British comedian Russell Brand, 35, later this year.
The details of their nuptials are top-secret, but Perry insists the organizing part is driving her crazy.
‘I am up to my eyeballs in planning everything right now. Most people have breakdowns planning their wedding. I’m having a breakdown right now,’ Stuff.co.nz quoted Katy as telling Australian radio hosts Kyle and Jackie O. (ANI)
For a girl who wrote a song about the disillusionment of real-life love not panning out the way it does on the big screen (”Not Like The Movies“), Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” video is a picture-perfect look at young love. Or at least young lust. Or at least the way it should look in teen movies.
In her “Teenage Dream” video, Katy Perry goes cruising with the top down, takes her top off to get busy in a black bra in what looks like a pay-by-the-hour motel room with actor Josh Kloss (remember him from “The O.C.”?), and has the sexiest pool party since Fiona Apple’s “Criminal” video. (Or Justin Bieber and Sean Kingston’s “Eenie Meenie,” depending on your perspective). “Teenage Dream” was filmed in Katy Perry’s home town of Santa Barbara.
Watch this sneak peek of Katy Perry’s “Teenage Dream” video, directed by Yoann Lemoine. And watch the full-length video when it premieres on MTV on Tuesday, August 10.

The ‘California Gurls’ singer has teamed up with fragrance firm Firmenich to create Purr by Katy Perry – which includes peach nectar, apple, green bamboo, jasmine blossom and vanilla orchid as its ingredients – and she is confident consumers will be impressed with it.
She told WWD:
“There are amazing fragrances backed by other celebrities, but what I’m bringing is not like any other. It wasn’t just like, ‘I love gardenias.’ That would have been the easy route. I really wanted to develop a scent that was completely unlike anything I’d smelled before and not one that smelled like a knockoff of another scent. I’d never want to do anything ‘just because.’ ”
The 25-year-old beauty says she was inspired to have her own scent because she is such a perfume fan and had seen other stars do it. Continue Reading »
